Práctica de hoy. Dibujar

Proyecto F

Practicando acuarela; verdes y cielo.

Values, an essential aspect

"The first things to study are form and values. For me, these are the things that are the basics of what is serious in art."

Jean Baptiste Corot (1796-1875), French painter

Value - An element of art that refers to luminance or luminosity — the lightness or darkness of a color. This is important in any polychromaticimage, but it can be more apparent when an image is monochromatic, as in many drawings, woodcuts, lithographs, and photographs. This is commonly the case in much sculpture and architecture too.

Tone and tonality - A quality of a color, arising from its saturation (purity and impurity), intensity (brilliance and dimness), luminosity (brightness and dullness), and temperature (warm and cool); or to create such a quality in a color. To tone down is to make a color less vivid, harsh, or violent; moderate. To tone up is to make one become brighter or more vigorous. Tonality can refer to the general effect in painting of light, color, and shade, or the relative range of these qualities in color schemes.
From this link.

I am going to do a new exercise with this photo:
the first way is to identify the values so I have edited the photo in black and white.

Experiment one

I used a web page for getting a reference photo : photos4artists.co.uk
This is my outcome:

It was  an experiment really. last day I tried to draw a sunflower and it was a great failure so I have thought that I have to experiment with my draw to distinguish what need to practice. The basics are proportions, shape, values and tonality and colour.

This work shows me that I make certain mistakes such as grounds, values, borders and edges ( perfiles).
My first goal is to work about values and tonalities. I have noticed that I can´t draw trees because I need to distinguish the different values which make real everything rhat you can see in the landscape.

This is the reference photo:

New attempt

Lonely.

At the bottom

I chose a photo and I tried to draw in pastel. The photo shows different colours of green through leaves. In the middle there is a wall o maybe a amount  of rocks in a irregular line. Two trees in the right and another in the left complete the lanscape. At the top the sky isn't bright.
The main feature of this paintings is the emptyness and it is absolutely bored. The sense of painting is to be full of soul or sometihing new, as a stethic or some special sense such as beauty, spirituality, etc.

What was the problem? If I drew other lanscape better than this. I have realized that  I don' t have technique to choose in each moment. I think it is no question to take a stick and spread it a long the paper. Practice is essential but not either practice.  A long last years I draw for pleasure trying to improve. After analysing my way to draw I make the same mistakes. I draw without orientation. I take the advice of many drawers which is draw , draw , draw and it will pull out easily. Is it true? I have doubts about it. I think the way in the case of pastel is to do a painting at the same time as an artist. It was the case of my painting  of pears.
I am going to copy a landscape which I have watched in YouTube.

Try again . Don't be afraid.

In the afternoon I began to paint a wood and It was a horrible situation. However, at night it changed. I forgot the last attempt and tryed to repeat the same landscape and this was the outcome.

Another one

If  I want to draw landscape better I need to master the essence of the nature, its shapes, volume, shadow and light.

The type of paper is very important

I am not glad with this drawing because the vineyard is bad painting. The paper is a scholar sheet and sticks didn't spread well.I know this paper is not accuracy but it is cheaper and it is good to these practices. I have better paper;nevertheless, I am saving to use when I master this technique.
I drew at night and it was very late when I went to this outcome. I think i will good work in lanscape pastel in the future. It is a grateful painting.

Imitate the best authors

I love this artist  Loriann Signori. I found her blog and it is full of masterpieces paintings in pastel. If you want to see them go there: http://loriannsignori.blogspot.com

I have tried to imitate her style. This is my version of it.

Conclusion: I need more colours, so more sticks.
One of the most agradable thing in this activity is visiting shop and get new supplies.
